Oklahoma Research Highlights

Impact of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraception on whole-body protein turnover in recreationally active females

2 weeks 5 days ago
Protein turnover may be influenced by menstrual cycle hormones and hormones from oral contraceptives (OCs) and hormonal intrauterine devices (H-IUDs), yet data are limited. This study evaluated whole-body protein turnover in 40 healthy, active females (eumenorrheic = 15; OC = 13; H-IUD = 12) tested once in low- and high-hormone phases. Using a [^(15)N]alanine tracer, net protein balance, synthesis, breakdown, and nitrogen flux were measured. No group differences were observed. Protein breakdown...

Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) as Novel Sources for Population-Based Post Marketing Surveillance of Medical Products: A Pilot Study from the FDA Sentinel Innovation Center

2 weeks 5 days ago
INTRODUCTION: Health information exchanges (HIEs) provide the capability to electronically move health care information among different health care information systems and store these data for downstream use cases. However, use of data from HIEs for postmarketing surveillance of medical products has not previously been explored.

Severity-dependent proteomic alterations in the rat hippocampus following pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus

2 weeks 5 days ago
Status epilepticus (SE) is a prolonged seizure state that can induce lasting hippocampal damage and promote the development of spontaneous seizures and cognitive deficits. The severity and duration of SE affect long-term outcomes; however, many studies rely on behavioral assessments such as the Racine scale, which may miss subclinical or non-convulsive seizures and leave the molecular effects of mild SE unclear. Here, we examined whether behavioral seizure severity in the pilocarpine rat model...

Obligate faunivorous megatheropod size class patterns across the Jurassic-Cretaceous Periods

2 weeks 4 days ago
Allosauroidea, Ceratosauria, Megalosauroidea, Megaraptora, and Tyrannosauroidea are five clades containing obligate faunivorous megatheropods. These clades included apex predators from the Early Jurassic until the end of the Cretaceous Period. Studying the timeline of median size class change for ceratosaurians, tyrannosauroids, and megaraptorans compared to the extinction of the incumbent apex predator clades, allosauroids and megalosauroids, is important regarding megatheropod guild structure....
