Oklahoma Research Highlights

Understanding the Sources of Subnational Disparities in Cigarette Smoking Prevalence: Findings From a Multi-State Rapid-Response Survey in the U.S., 2023-2024

2 months 2 weeks ago
CONCLUSIONS: The mitigation of subnational smoking disparities requires concerted tobacco control efforts tailored to smoking cessation among older adults and persons with less than college education and population-level advancement in educational attainment.

Qualifying optical biometry data before cataract surgery using autoencoders

2 months 2 weeks ago
CONCLUSIONS: Autoencoders are quite popular for different application fields in engineering, and could also help in ophthalmology to identify potentially faulty biometric measurements which could lead to refractive surprises if used for intraocular lens power calculation. Further studies are required to validate this concept with other parameters or datasets from other biometers.

Structure-Based Design of Covalent SARS-CoV‑2 Main Protease Inhibitors Targeting the Nirmatrelvir-Resistant E166 Mutants

2 months 2 weeks ago
The COVID-19 pandemic spurred the rapid development of nirmatrelvir, a main protease (M^(pro)) inhibitor now widely prescribed as part of Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir). However, increasing use has raised concerns about drug resistance. Resistance selection studies have identified multiple M^(pro) mutations, with E166V emerging as a particularly resistant variant. Sequencing data from COVID-19 patients confirms E166V as a clinically relevant mutation, and importantly, this substitution...

Taraxacum officinale Seed Extract Inhibits HeLa Cell Migration at Sub-cytotoxic Concentrations

2 months 2 weeks ago
Dandelion seed extract exhibits potent anticancer activity in HeLa cells. HeLa viability decreased with increasing doses of DSE from 0 to 0.8 mg/mL, while HDF viability was not affected under similar conditions. DSE reduced HeLa cells' migration speed between 0-0.050 mg/mL, while no significant effect was observed in HDF cells over the same range. Both cell lines exhibited a significant decrease in cell migration speed at 0.1 mg/mL. This data suggests that DSE treatment inhibits cell migration...

Minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion: Primary endpoint results from the prospective, multicenter STACI study

2 months 2 weeks ago
CONCLUSION: Interim trial results support the safety and effectiveness of lateral SIJ fusion performed by IPM physicians. Clinically significant improvements in pain and disability are commensurate with results from surgeon-performed randomized trials and published literature. Results should be reproduced in randomized trials.
