Prevalence and determinants of hypertension among people living with HIV in Ghana: A cross-sectional study

2 months 1 week ago
CONCLUSION: This study found a high prevalence of hypertension among PLHIV. Second-line ART may reduce the risk of hypertension, while higher muscle mass may have a protective effect. Further research is needed to better understand the impact of dietary diversity and specific dietary components on hypertension in this population.

Leveraging probabilistic forecasts for dengue preparedness and control: The 2024 Dengue Forecasting Sprint in Brazil

2 months 1 week ago
Forecast models are a key decision-support tool for public health authorities in managing epidemics, feeding into early warning systems, scenario evaluations, and an empirical basis for resource allocation. In Brazil, improving dengue forecasting became a priority in response to the unprecedented increase in cases, which surpassed the total of the previous decade and expanded to new regions. The Infodengue-Mosqlimate consortium launched the Infodengue-Mosqlimate Dengue Challenge 2024 (IMDC24),...

The Typability Index: A tool for measuring and controlling for typing difficulty in text stimuli

2 months 1 week ago
In typing proficiency tests, like those used in job recruitment or research studies, individuals are evaluated based on their speed and accuracy. However, the difficulty of the typed text, its 'typability', can impact typing performance, introducing variability that is unrelated to skill. To ensure valid comparisons across individuals, time, and conditions, it is crucial to control for this variation in text difficulty. To address this issue, we develop the Typability Index, a model that...

Short-term clinical outcomes of changing CSF shunt valve type or shunt valve brand in revision surgeries for the management of pediatric hydrocephalus

2 months 1 week ago
CONCLUSION: In this two-center cohort of shunt revisions involving the valve, changing the valve type or brand was not associated with differences in early (30-day) complication rates. A significant trend toward fewer complications after changing the programmable valve brand was observed in a small subgroup and should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating. Larger, longer-term studies are needed to determine the impact of valve choice on shunt survival and long-term outcomes.

Causes and extent of avoidable mortality across the european union: insights for advancing healthy aging

2 months 1 week ago
Although population aging is a global worldwide phenomenon, it is most pronounced in European Union countries. An unhealthy ageing population not only places a heavy burden on healthcare, but also hinders sustainable socio-economic development. Supporting healthy aging can be achieved through evidence-based strategies aimed at reducing avoidable mortality and interventions that promote these strategies. Our study is based on a secondary analysis of Eurostat data for 2022 to describe the extent...
