Recommendations from the Clinical Toxicology Recommendations Collaborative on the administration of activated charcoal in acute oral overdose

4 weeks 2 days ago
CONCLUSIONS: The Workgroup recommends the administration of a single-dose of activated charcoal beyond the traditional 1 h post-ingestion time point in selected poisons and introduces the concept of an additional dose of activated charcoal to prevent further absorption of poisons that may remain in the gastrointestinal tract for prolonged periods of time. Multiple-dose activated charcoal is also recommended to enhance elimination in selected clinical scenarios.

Draft genome sequence of <em>Aeromonas enteropelogenes</em> A5 isolated from diseased tiger shrimp (<em>Penaeus monodon</em>) in Bangladesh

4 weeks 2 days ago
We report the draft genome sequence of Aeromonas enteropelogenes A5, isolated from a diseased shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in Bangladesh. The 4,571,270 bp genome contains 4,125 predicted coding sequences with 59.6% GC content and multiple putative virulence-associated genes. The genome provides insights into the pathogenic potential of A. enteropelogenes in shrimp aquaculture.

A Phase 3 Trial of Brepocitinib in Dermatomyositis

4 weeks 2 days ago
CONCLUSIONS: In adults with dermatomyositis that was resistant to previous therapy, the use of brepocitinib at a dose of 30 mg (but not at a dose of 15 mg) resulted in significant benefits with respect to a composite myositis index, skin disease severity, glucocorticoid tapering, and functional disability. (Funded by Priovant Therapeutics; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT05437263.).

Non-neuronal sites of latency for alphaherpesviruses

4 weeks 2 days ago
Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily members are widespread pathogens that cause a range of significant human and animal diseases, from mild mucocutaneous lesions to severe neurological and neonatal infections. Following primary infection of the craniofacial or genital mucosa, lytic replication occurs in epithelial cells, resulting in the production of infectious virus. Virus shed from infected epithelial cells inevitably encounters and enters sensory nerve termini innervating these tissues, after which...

The bacteria of a fig community

4 weeks 2 days ago
Understanding the biotic drivers of diversity is a major goal of microbial ecology. One approach toward tackling this issue is to interrogate relatively simple communities that are easy to observe and perturb. Figs (syconia) of the genus Ficus represent such a system. Here, we describe the microbial communities of Ficus septica figs, which are associated with the nematode Caenorhabditis inopinata (the sister species of the C. elegans genetic model system). In 2019, 38 Ficus septica figs (across...
