Oklahoma Research Highlights

Axially Swept Light-Sheet Microscopy using scattering and fluorescence contrast mechanisms

3 weeks 6 days ago
Light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) has found numerous applications in the life sciences through its gentle, rapid and efficient volumetric imaging capabilities. It would be advantageous if its rapid 3D imaging capabilities could be extended to non-fluorescent contrast mechanisms such as light-scattering. Yet, the coherent illumination with a light-sheet can cause cross-interference from multiple scatterers. Consequently, this can lead to an object-variant point-spread function, which...

The post-reproductive ovary shifts from a reproductive to an immune-like organ

3 weeks 6 days ago
Reproductive aging in females is characterized by the irreversible depletion of ovarian follicles, yet the structure and function of the post-reproductive ovary remain poorly defined. Using paired histological and bulk transcriptomic analyses of ovaries from reproductively young (2 m), reproductively old (18 m), and post-reproductive (24 m) mice, we mapped how ovarian identity evolves beyond follicle exhaustion. As expected, follicle loss, stromal remodeling, and increased collagen deposition...

Effects of L-BAIBA supplementation with and without grains of paradise on changes in resting metabolic rate, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors

3 weeks 6 days ago
Strategies to augment weight loss, fitness, and body composition are in high demand. The myokine beta-amino-isobutyric acid (BAIBA) has been shown to increase fat loss, while grains of paradise (GOP), a member of the ginger family, may aid weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing thermogenesis.Purpose To evaluate the impact of 56 days of supplementing with L-BAIBA or L-BAIBA + GOP (BGOP) on resting metabolic rate, body composition, perceptual indicators of mood and affect, and...

Improving Access and Reducing the Burden on Public Ophthalmology: Collaborative Telehealth Models Between Ophthalmology and Optometry in Australia

3 weeks 6 days ago
CONCLUSIONS: Collaborative telehealth with optometry improves access to ophthalmology services in rural Australia and should be considered in metropolitan settings and other countries.

Associations of symptom burden with patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcomes among early phase cancer clinical trial participants

3 weeks 6 days ago
CONCLUSION: Among EPCT participants, higher symptom burden at time of clinical trial initiation correlated with decreased QOL, increased depression/anxiety symptoms, worse financial well-being, shorter time on trial, and worse overall survival. Interventions seeking to enhance care delivery and outcomes for EPCT participants should strive to address the symptom burden of this population.
