The cobras (genus Naja) of Myanmar: An updated species list with information on identification, distributions, and medical importance

2 weeks 1 day ago
The cobra diversity of Myanmar has long been a source of confusion, complicating public health responses to snakebites resulting from this medically important genus. By integrating distributional data, natural history information, and clinical evidence, we clarify the composition and distribution of Myanmar's cobra fauna and evaluate the implications for envenoming and snakebite management. We confirm the presence of five cobra species (Naja fuxi, N. kaouthia, N. mandalayensis, N. siamensis, and...

Single-Cell Mass Spectrometry Imaging Using Desorption Electrospray Ionization Coupled To Orbitrap Mass Spectrometers

2 weeks 1 day ago
Desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) enables ambient, matrix-free molecular imaging with minimal sample preparation. This protocol describes a workflow for single-cell MSI of OVCAR-8 cells using DESI coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometers. The system integrates a DESI sprayer, a modified mass spectrometer interface, a motorized XYZ stage, and an optical breadboard for high-spatial-resolution imaging. Cells are cultured on gridded glass coverslips, washed with...

Horizontal transfer of mitochondria in cancer: The physiology reborn in disease?

2 weeks 1 day ago
Intercellular mitochondria transfer has emerged as a new form of cell-to-cell communication with profound consequences for cellular fate. A growing body of evidence defines mitochondria transfer between cells as a new pathological program in which cancer cells appropriate functional mitochondria from donor cells, thereby co-opting conserved physiological mechanisms of energy allocation to gain bioenergetic and phenotypic advantages. Our recent work demonstrates the prevalence of mitochondria...

A 5-year review of fungal keratitis in Oklahoma

CONCLUSION: The epidemiologic patterns observed in this geographic region of the United States, a mold-predominant environment with frequent steroid misuse and CL-associated disease, highlight the importance of early diagnosis, risk-factor modification, and ready access to adjunctive therapies. As FK incidence continues to rise in similar climates, these lessons from our regional cohort may help refine triage pathways and inform treatment approaches to reduce preventable vision loss.
