Oklahoma Research Highlights

No compelling evidence that vaccination with streptococcus pyogenes group A carbohydrate elicits cross-reactive rheumatic fever autoantibodies

2 months 1 week ago
We reviewed 70 years of research defining the specificity of anti-group A carbohydrate (GAC) monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies and antibodies raised against other S. pyogenes components reacting with GAC. While some rheumatic fever associated autoantibodies react with N-Acetyl-β-D-glucosamine sidechains of GAC and cross-react with tissues, these appear to be a consequence, not the cause, of autoimmunity. We propose GAC be considered further as a broadly protective group A streptococcal...

INTEGRATED PET THERAPY ON CAMPUSA case study exploration of campus community members' perceptions of the well-being benefits associated with a canine-assisted intervention

2 months 1 week ago
College students face many mental health struggles. Research shows the positive mental health impact of canine-assisted interventions (CAI), especially among college students. This study draws on a 2023 case study of Pete's Pet Posse (P3) at Oklahoma State University (OSU), an institutionally-integrated CAI program providing yearlong events since 2013. The exploratory study was guided by the following research question: How do campus community members perceive the well-being benefits of P3? We...

Lipolysis gone rogue: the HSL connection in feeding cancer

2 months 1 week ago
Lipolysis, a tightly regulated metabolic process, is hijacked by cancer cells to meet their energy and biosynthetic demands under stress. Central to this process is hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), a key enzyme that orchestrates lipid mobilization by hydrolyzing diacylglycerols into free fatty acids (FFAs). This review explores the pivotal and multifaceted role of HSL in cancer metabolism, focusing on its dual function acting as both a tumor promoter and suppressor depending on the cancer type...

Development of the Self-Administered Health Complexity Screening Instrument

2 months 1 week ago
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to develop a self-administered screening tool to assist case managers, primary care physicians, and other clinicians in quickly and accurately identifying patients with complex health needs who require a definitive and detailed case management evaluation. In addition to medical and psychiatric items, this tool incorporates multiple social determinants of health (SDOH), known to add to clinical complexity.
