Using Alcohol and Sleep Sensors to Understand Blackout Risk in Young Adults' Natural Settings (The Lights Out Study): Protocol for an Intensive Longitudinal Pilot Study

2 months 3 weeks ago
CONCLUSIONS: This study seeks to understand 2 key modifiable behaviors that may be associated with increased AIB risk by leveraging multiple forms of innovative measurement. The integration of ecological momentary assessments with 2 sensors to capture alcohol use and sleep also supports potential applications in future digital interventions. This study will further enhance our preliminary data on the feasibility and acceptability of these methods, providing opportunities for conducting future...

Effects of the space environment and re-adaptation to Earth's gravity on astronauts' plasma proteome

2 months 3 weeks ago
We performed a label-free quantitative plasma proteomic analysis on samples from eight astronauts who completed a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, using an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer (MS). Blood samples were collected from each astronaut at different times, i.e., pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. We found that the abundance levels of 16 proteins were significantly altered (p ≤ 0.05), particularly in the in-flight samples. The functions of these 16...

Molecular characterization and geographic incidence of two pestiviruses infecting the corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis) in the United States

2 months 3 weeks ago
The corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) is a major pest of corn in the Americas, transmitting pathogens that cause corn stunt disease. Using high-throughput sequencing and PCR-based assays, we identified and characterized two novel large-genome pestiviruses (LGPs), chicharrita del maiz pestivirus 1 (ChMPV1) and 2 (ChMPV2), from D. maidis populations collected in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Iowa. Genome analysis revealed long polyproteins with conserved...

Functional role of UGT72B1 in lignin and flavonoid metabolism in Medicago truncatula: Insights from growth, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses

2 months 3 weeks ago
UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) critically regulate forage biomass and quality via effecting lignin and flavonoid biosynthesis. The model legume, Medicago truncatula provides a valuable system for understanding the regulatory mechanisms governing lignin and flavonoid accumulation. Although independent UGT mutants affected in MtUGT72B1 exhibited retarded growth and increased lignification, the regulatory mechanisms underlying UGT72B1 and its impact on metabolic pathways remain unclear. To explore...

Metabolomic Markers of Left Ventricular Structure, Diastolic Function, and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease: A Longitudinal Study in American Indian Individuals

2 months 3 weeks ago
CONCLUSIONS: We identified metabolomic markers of LV structure and diastolic function, several of which that were independently associated with CHD risk, providing insight into metabolic pathways underlying LV subclinical changes and CHD.
